The Mountain Princess is the first in the Montanus series and is also the first story I ever wrote. It started with one imagined scene in which a girl finds a hole in her garden wall and goes through it to find herself in a completely different place, kind of like Dorothy opening the door and finding herself in Oz. Fortunately, stories grow and develop. I had to think through what my main character would find on the other side both adventure-wise and enemy-wise. The girl had to develop personality and character, and the initial version had to be revised somewhat drastically. Nevertheless, Ella, Petten, Alissa, Luff, Berta, and Cook were all there in the first draft–as was the beautiful but evil Fern Queen.

Montanus is probably the world I would choose to live in out of all my imagined worlds. I love mountains, and it was amazing to me what variety was possible even in a world full of mountains.
